Why are we doing this and how will it be accomplished?
The Princess Anne corridor is the first impression for many people entering Fredericksburg. Restoring the Canal Quarter has already begun through a combination of independent grassroots movements, private businesses, and government support. Our mission is to grow and promote the Quarter by attracting new entrepreneurs, businesses, and residents to create a thriving addition to our city.
What and where is the Canal Quarter?
The Canal Quarter consists of the Route 1 / Fall Hill / Princess Anne corridors and adjacent neighborhoods between the Rappahannock Canal and River, including Normandy Village, Riverside, and Fall Hill. The City Council approved the Area 6 small area plan on January 22, 2019. Highlights of the plan include revitalizing the northern gateway into the City, balancing anticipated growth with preservation of existing neighborhoods, establishing a Creative Maker district "Canal Quarter" to enable the evolution of the Princess Anne Corridor into a vibrant center for production and commercial activity, and addressing transportation, environmental, and open space issues.

The Canal Quarter was started by a collection of business owners, city planners, educators, residents and creatives. The concept was originally pitched as a Maker District by City Planners Mike Craig, Chuck Johnson, and Susanna Finn. Soon the project attracted a diverse array of community supporters. We are a working group focused on the future of businesses and development. We would love your support and input to help grow this project.
Ultimately none of this happens on its own. We would love to have your support and input to help grow this project. We are looking for ideas, solutions and strategies for the future of the Canal Quarter. Submit an idea. Give us your thoughts!
